The Heinz Endowments’ five programs— Arts & Culture; Children, Youth & Families; Community & Economic Development; Education; and Environment & Health — work collaboratively within our strategic priorities of Creativity, Learning and Sustainability. Our program staff provides the expertise needed to address challenges in the Pittsburgh region and to improve the quality of life for all of its residents. Together, the programs and strategic priorities advance the idea of a just and inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to learn, work and flourish.

The Arts & Culture Program work is based on the premise that the presence and success of creative individuals and organizations is central to the well-being of our citizens and the broader community.

The Children, Youth & Families Program is committed to improving the lives of families and children, particularly the disadvantaged, by promoting holistic development of children and youth, effective family engagement and supportive relationships with communities.

Community & Economic Development Program staff work to build just and sustainable communities, specifically focusing on building wealth for marginalized Pittsburghers and rebuilding economically distressed neighborhoods particularly those where weak markets meet strong ones.

The Education Program provides support to Pittsburgh-area children in grades K-12 and their families, especially those in distressed neighborhoods, by investing in learning initiatives and experiences that are accessible, equitable and high quality.

The Environment & Health Program seeks to foster healthy environments, support the development of a clean economy, and promote community-led, solution-oriented outcomes to realize a truly livable and equitable region.

Three strategic areas – Creativity, Learning and Sustainability – guide and focus our grantmaking, drawing on the knowledge and experience our program staff to ensure the effectiveness of our work.
