Arts & Culture Arts & Culture

The Endowments has a long-held belief in the power of high-quality arts, vibrant creativity-focused organizations, and well-designed and welcoming public spaces.  A healthy arts and culture landscape reflects the richly diverse population that calls southwestern Pennsylvania home and brings with it a sense of community and belonging.

Our work in the arts and culture sector celebrates creative risks and spurs innovation with the aim of making our region indispensable to both emerging and established creatives. We are not afraid of supporting big artistic chances, understanding that they can spur innovation, robust conversation and increased arts-focused visits to the communities we serve.

We embrace the importance of reliable region-wide data in understanding how Pittsburgh and its surrounding communities value, engage and understand the arts.

We believe well designed, sustainable public spaces are critical to the long-term success of our region and provide not only inspiration and joy but also places to gather, share and learn.

The Endowments played an early role in the 1970s transformation of what is now known as Heinz Hall into the premier home of the internationally respected Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. From our mid-1980’s support of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, which has been instrumental in transforming a then-struggling 14-block area of downtown into a thriving Cultural District to the upcoming Arts Landing outdoor performance space and arts-centered park, we have been honored to be a partner in bringing many of our region’s most beloved public spaces to life.

The arts cannot exist without artists, and the Endowments has a deep history of supporting artists and the arts organizations that serve them. We support individual artists through the Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh and Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Awards initiatives, as well as through grants to art-centered collectives that foster and uplift our region’s creatives.

We welcome partners who share our three primary Arts & Culture priorities: innovative capacity building for creativity-focused organizations, audience-centered engagement, and supportive infrastructure for our region’s arts ecosystem.

Pittsburgh's Cultural Treasures

From 2021-24, the Endowments distributed $9 million dollars directly to Black-led cultural organizations through the Pittsburgh’s Cultural Treasures initiative, a partnership with the Ford Foundation and its national partners on the America’s Cultural Treasures Regional Challenge Initiative. We have long held a deep commitment to supporting Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and cultural organizations in the Pittsburgh region. We believe philanthropy has been rightly challenged to examine its history and role in addressing inequity in the arts and culture sector. Alongside other national and regional partners in this effort, we welcomed this opportunity to lift up proud creative traditions, better understand their needs and significance, and invest in meaningful ways that contribute mightily to the culture and dynamism of our region.

Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Awards

The Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Awards program, supported by The Heinz Endowments in partnership with The Pittsburgh Foundation, is guided by a shared belief in artistic excellence, creative development and the need for continuous career advancement. In the tradition of the Creative Achievement Awards created by Carol Brown during her tenure as president of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, two grants will be awarded every two years: one to an established artist and one to an emerging artist living and working in the southwestern Pennsylvania region. The Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Awards are not project grants; rather, they are awards in recognition of exemplary artistic achievements and the promise of future work.

Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh

The Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh initiative is an outgrowth of a commitment by both The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments to foster a vibrant and inclusive cultural life in the Pittsburgh region. The foundations maintained a long-term commitment to arts and culture as important factors in the region’s quality of life, in the well-being of its citizens, and in its image and economy. Both The Heinz Endowments and The Pittsburgh Foundation have made consistent investments towards the initiative since its inception in 1988. Co-managed by both foundations until 2023, the program is now managed by The Pittsburgh Foundation, with considerable financial support from the Endowments.
