Sector Strengthening: Kelly Strayhorn Theater

Kelly Strayhorn Theater (KST) provides opportunity for Pittsburgh’s arts community by commissioning and producing original theater, music, dance and multimedia works that represent the kaleidoscope of diversity of our region.

Named after entertainment legends – actor/dancer Gene Kelly and composer/lyricist Billy Strayhorn, who spent formative years in Pittsburgh - KST’s programming, classes and workshops strive to give all artists the skills and support needed to fully express their creativity.

KST’s Freshworks residency program supports emerging artists with project planning and mentorship, studio space, lighting and sound design expertise, as well as stipends and project resource budgets. Through trusted partnerships with respected theaters in southwest Pennsylvania and across the country, they elevate the region’s talent and connect them with their contemporaries, inspiring collaboration and fortifying the creative community.

“We amplify the creativity of historically resilient communities so that all are seen and heard,” said Co-Executive Director Joseph Hall. “Black women, LGBTQA+, people of color and emerging artists have important stories and experiences to share, and Kelly Strayhorn Theater provides the structure, skills, guidance and stage for them to bring their artistic visions to life.”
