Grantmaking: Locally focused, globally engaged

The Heinz Endowments strives to improve the quality of life for all, focusing its grantmaking primarily on the southwestern Pennsylvania region and in addressing many challenges that we share with communities across the United States, and globally.

Alert to society’s changing social and economic dynamics, the foundation seeks to apply collaborative, creative and transformative strategies in its approach to critical issues in its efforts to safeguard the well-being of families, individuals and organizations in our regional community.

That is why, following extensive consultation with and valued input from local nonprofit, civic and organizational leadership, the Endowments developed a new grantmaking model in 2016 by establishing three priority strategic funding areas: Creativity, Learning and Sustainability.

These priorities are purposefully designed to address pressing community need, and to work together in funding programs that may be positioned at the intersections of the strategic areas. And at the core of the Endowments’ grantmaking principles is the advancement of a Just Pittsburgh with a steadfast commitment to issues of equity and social justice. A Just Pittsburgh creates a community that is fair, inclusive and equitable for all.

Our vision is to help everyone in our community share in the prosperity of our Pittsburgh region as a vibrant, healthy, and creative center of innovation, fairness, and social, economic and environmental sustainability.

The Endowments’ work in Creativity supports and celebrates the importance of creativity in all aspects of the region’s success — through its artists and cultural organizations; the quality of life in its neighborhoods; the excellence of its public realm; and the voices of its citizens as active participants in cultural life.

The Heinz Endowments’ focus on family and child well-being, holistic education and workforce readiness helps to build a community where curiosity, collaboration and innovation are encouraged and everyone has the opportunity to learn and achieve.

As part of its efforts to pursue a just and sustainable Pittsburgh, The Heinz Endowments is advancing an equitable, clean economy that protects public health and the environment, and benefits all citizens of Pittsburgh.
