BACKGROUND
The Heinz Endowments is based in Pittsburgh, where it uses its region as a laboratory for the development of solutions to challenges that are national in scope. PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION
This is a key hire as the individual who is chosen will be the first program officer hired to work broadly in the strategic grantmaking area of Creativity, bringing strong content expertise in arts and culture, while also possessing the ability to work collaboratively across the other two areas of focus. This individual must be sophisticated about looking for intersectionality, and respectful and ego-less in their approach to working with organizations. The Arts & Culture Program supports the work of the Endowments’ Creativity Area, which includes grantmaking responsibilities in the areas of creative citizens, creative artists and organizations, and creative places. This position focuses on two strands of work: managing a range of grant programs that support Pittsburgh’s cultural institutions and artists, and contributing to the integration of the Creativity area in all aspects of the Endowments’ work. This full-time, exempt position reports to the Vice President for Creativity, and out of necessity must work collaboratively with colleagues in other programmatic and functional areas of the organization.

Metrics
Supervision of in excess of $2 million in grant funding annually.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Assuming primary responsibility for the Endowments’ work in arts education, including the Endowments’ Transformative Arts Program and out-of-school-time grantmaking.
  • Managing and evaluating the Small Arts Initiative, a program for organizations and artist consortia with budgets of less than $250,000.
  • Working in concert with The Pittsburgh Foundation to manage two jointly sponsored grants programs: Investing in Professional Artists and Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh.
  • Assisting the Vice President for Creativity in the management of the Endowments’ operating support programs for approximately 30 cultural organizations.
  • Maintaining strong relationships with Creativity grantees.
  • Attending performances, presentations, and exhibitions of organizations and artists supported by the Endowments.
  • Creating connections between cultural organizations and artists as well as between the Learning and Sustainability areas.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The ideal candidate for this role has a unique blend of the following:

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution (BA or BS) is required, preferable in the arts and/or humanities.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in arts management or a related field is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated direct and applied experience working in/managing a nonprofit cultural institution or organization.
  • Also preferred is background, experience, or training that relates to arts education or community arts.
  • Passion for and commitment to the role of arts and culture in community life.
  • The intellectual capacity to think broadly about the arts and culture sector in Pittsburgh.
  • A commitment to equity in the arts, and demonstrated cultural competence in working with diverse communities that may be distressed or under-represented in terms of community assets or resources.
  • Understanding of the needs and issues facing individual artists and creative workers.
  • Skill in working in teams, the ability to play an important role in the Endowments’ restructuring as a more cross-programmatic organization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build relationships amongst diverse individuals, organizations and communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to deadlines, manage time and juggle multiple projects.
  • Collegiality and a sense of humor.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
